Dark Mofo 2016 Lineup Unleashed

Ready yourselves mofos, because the lineup for this year's Dark Mofo (icy sister to the Museum of Old and New Art’s January music and arts spectacle MONA FOMA) is going to melt minds. Over two weeks of dreamlike abandon, Dark Mofo will delight with a bevy of music, arts and cultural events to rival any city in the world.

As we all know by now, art at MONA is without definition - so expect to find a full spectrum and miscellany of creative pursuits and performances.

The festival's art program will see controversial performance artist Mike Parr (best known for his confronting performances that often depict self-mutilation or extreme physical feats) produce a one off installation in response to the site of an historic mental institution dating from 1827.

Between June 11 and 19, a pop up performance space called the Black Box will house live performances by Japanese noise maestro Ryoji Ikeda, progenitor of dark ambient music Lustmord and conceptual performers Tim Hecker and Marcel Weber.

The music program, set in the historic Odeon Theatre, will see American electronic sorceress Chelsea Wolfe return to play a one-off show; her first on antipodean shores since 2012. She will be joined by interdisciplinary chanteuse Jarboe (of Swans and Neurosis), and Brooklyn experimental composer JG Thirlwell.

Also returning on the back of their striking sophomore album, Adore Life, are London post-punks Savages. If you caught them during their 2014 tour, you'll know this is one you can't afford to miss.

Dark Mofo punters can expect to be treated to some of the darkest music being made in the world today, with Hymns to the Dead featuring performances from Prague's esoteric death metallers Cult of Fire, Swedish prog-black metal act Tribulation, blasphemous Greek death metal titans Dead Congregation and Melbourne doom lords Inverloch, all shaking the stage (and possibly some plaster off the ceiling) at the Odeon Theatre.

Closing out Dark Mofo is the traditional Nude Solistice Swim on the no doubt crisp morning of 21 June. A contemporary ritual enacted as the sun rises, this annual spectacle sees festival goers shed their inhibitions (along with their clothes) and brace themselves for a new year.
